
Modes of Transportation in Austria
Austria’s transportation system - a vast network of regional train and bus lines, coupled with extensive city public transportation systems, is among the most highly developed in the European Union.
Overview
Located at the intersection of important North-South and East-West transport routes, the country has around 2,000 km of well-developed highways, and a dense network of flight connections that enables easy travel throughout Europe, especially to destinations in Eastern Europe, as well as other overseas destinations. The Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) boast a punctuality rate of 94% and were ranked among the most reliable railway operators in Europe in 2024. According to the ÖBB, the electricity used for the trains is from 100% renewable energy.

In 2020, the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) began expanding their night train service to European destinations.
There is also a private railway company called Westbahn, which operates routes from Vienna to the west (Salzburg, Tyrol, Vorarlberg).
