ID AUSTRIA

With ID Austria, people can identify themselves securely online, use digital services and carry out transactions

Advantages of ID Austria

Requirements for an ID Austria Account

  • You must be at least 14 years of age
  • You must have a smartphone with the Digitales Amt app, or an alternative suitable authentication app.
  • If you cannot set it up online, you will need to go to your local government office in person to complete the registration process

Registration without Austrian Citizenship

The registration process for ID Austria is handled differently for residents without Austrian citizenship. In this case, you must visit your local police station with proof that your life is currently based in Austria and that you are at least 14 years old. 

Make sure you bring relevant documentation with you, such as your employment contract or confirmation of enrolment at an Austrian university as proof of being based in Austria. Please also bring a current passport photo and your passport or ID card with you to your appointment at the local police station.

Registering for ID Austria, as an Austrian Citizen

If you are an Austrian citizen who is interested in registering for ID Austria for the first time, you have 3 options:

    • Step 1: Install the ID Austria app and pre-register using the online pre-registrationonline pre-registration () tool.
    • Step 2: Within 30 days of your pre-registration, schedule an appointment at one of the  offices listed here offices listed here ().

      Take the official ID you used to pre-register, your smartphone, and a passport photograph with you.

    • Step 3: Once you get there, load the TAN on your smartphone and show it to the official processing your registration.
    • Step 4: When prompted, enter your signature password into the app and create your signature
  • Install the "ID Austria" app before your visit to your local council offices. Once your identity has been verified online, you will receive an ID Austria printout with a QR code. Scan this with the "ID Austria" app to start the ID Austria registration process. The customer advisor will then send a TAN to your app to link it to your ID Austria account. You must then complete the registration online within three months: To do this, you will need the ID Austria printout, the "ID Austria" app and a second device.

  • Visit your local council offices with a mobile phone which can send/receive text messages. After verifying your identity online, the customer advisor will send you a TAN code by text message to start the ID Austria registration process. You will then receive an ID Austria printout, which you must use to complete the registration online within three months: You will need an internet-enabled device and a suitable authentication app.
