Trainee Shunting Locomotive Driver (Lateral Entry), Salzburg

ÖBB-Produktion GmbH
  • Salzburg
  • Full Time

Start your training as a shunting locomotive driver. Are you highly interested in operating locomotives, preparing them for our universal locomotive drivers, and checking all safety regulations? Then you’ve come to the right place!

Your tasks – exciting and varied:

  • Part of your daily routine includes preparing locomotives in compliance with regulations, inspecting them, and carrying out shunting and transfer journeys. Any noticeable damage is reported independently.
  • You take over trains and then park them correctly at the depot – always keeping an overview and working in close coordination with other colleagues.
  • In a comprehensive, several-month training programme, you will be carefully prepared for your future role – with plenty of practical experience and personal guidance.
  • During the training, you will gain valuable driving experience – both on the modern ÖBB simulator and in real railway operations.
  • Upon completion of the training, you will receive the locomotive driver’s licence Class A4, including shunting authorisation.

What you bring – our expectations:

  • You have completed vocational training (or equivalent), and you will be at least 19 years old by the start of the course.
  • You have already completed your military or civilian service, or you are exempt from it.
  • Excellent German language skills, both spoken and written, enable safe, friendly, and professional communication with passengers and colleagues.
  • You must be physically fit and have good vision and hearing.
  • You can easily reconcile shift work (including night, weekend, and holiday shifts) with your personal life and environment.

What we offer you – a compelling package:

  • A training programme that combines technology, responsibility, and teamwork – while offering room for personal development.
  • A high-quality yet significantly shorter training (approx. 28 weeks) than that for universal locomotive drivers.
  • The start of a long-term career as a locomotive driver – with opportunities for advancement to higher classes or additional locomotive types.
  • Experienced professionals and career changers are also very welcome: technical understanding and a passion for responsibility matter more than previous job titles.
  • For the role of "Trainee Shunting Locomotive Driver," a minimum gross annual salary of €38,351.88 is provided. After completing the training and upon taking up the role of "Shunting Locomotive Driver," the salary is at least €42,807.10 gross per year, with an above-collective agreement remuneration of at least €44,616.32 gross per year.
  • Additionally, performance-related supplementary payments (averaging €400 gross per month, excluding overtime) are made.
